Energy healing is a type of alternative healing that prescribes to the notion that the mind/body connection can be used to promote healing and well-being. This form of healing is based on accessing, channeling, balancing and/or manipulating energy to accelerate healing or maintain health.
Energy medicine believes that conventional medicine fails to invest in the whole body to promote healing and maintain health. Whereas traditional medicine uses prescription medications and surgery to heal the body, energy healers believe in the power of the physical, mental, and spiritual aspects of the person combining to heal them.
There are many different types of healing that fall under the category of Energy Healing. While the methods employed in the different types of energy therapy vary, they all subscribe to the notion that the body’s energy has a positive or negative effect on the body’s healing energy capabilities.
The Healing Touch – A Hands On Approach
There are several types of energy healing that require physical touch. Each of these methods is generally applied in a medical office of some sort, and tend to be relaxing. Here are a few hands-on energy therapy methods.
Massage therapy is easily the most well-accepted form of energy healing. Massage therapists work to relieve tension in the body, creating relaxation and promoting wellness. Massage therapy is typically applied with heated oil and relaxing music. Massage therapists say that toxins are released from the body during massage, which is why they recommend that patients drink plenty of water after a massage therapy session.
Chiropractic medicine is becoming more and more mainstream. Proponents of chiropractic medicine believe that the entire body is interconnected, and by adjusting the body, you can promote well-being. Chiropractors say that regular adjustments can relieve almost any illness, from colds to headaches to viral infections.
Reflexology is the application of pressure to certain points in the hands and feet to relieve pain in the body. Reflexologists believe that every part of the human body is connected to a specific part of the hands and feet, and by applying pressure to those points, the pain in the associated part of the body can be relieved.
Acupuncture and Acupressure
Both of these forms of hands on energy healing subscribe to the Chinese notion of qi, which flows through the body. Through either pressure (acupressure) or needles (acupuncture), you access the 500 points in the meridians of the body. The application of pressure or needles helps to align the body’s qi, thereby giving balance back to the body. This can be used to alleviate pain, pressure, and to promote health.
Healing Touch Therapy
Healing Touch Therapy utilizes touch in a heart-centered and intentional way to help facilitate emotional, physical, mental and spiritual health. While there are many different ways to use healing touch, all methods employ gentle, consistent touch to create relaxation and calmness. The belief is that physical touch encourages the energy centers that control the flow from the energy field to the physical body.
Energy Healing without Touch
Another type of energy healing is that of the hands-off energy healing. These methods focus on the energy of the body, rather than the physical body, to promote healing and well-being. Here are a few no-touch methods of energy therapy.
Pranic healing uses prana (life energy) to heal the physical ailments of the body, which accelerates the body’s inherent ability to heal itself. The basic principal of pranic healing is to cleanse the body of “dirty” energy and replace it with prana. The patient lies down, with the pranic healer standing over. Waving of the hands over the body, the healer concentrates on cleaning the energy of the patient.
Shamanic healers use the spiritual world to bring healing upon their clients. They conduct energy by calling upon spiritual helpers such as power animals or other spiritual forces to conduct energy from the spiritual realm. This type of work is used to treat a broad range of physical and emotional illnesses.
Proponents of color therapy believe that different colors offer different healing capabilities. If you undergo color therapy, you will lie on a table. The practitioner will then wave, slowly and gently, a wand of a particular color of light, over your body. This is thought to promote your body’s natural healing capabilities.
Meditation is a form of concentrated breathing in a quiet space, either alone or with a group, for the purpose of clearing your mind. There are two purposes to meditation- either to empty your mind or to focus on one particular thing.
Meditation is believed to strengthen the body’s vibrations, achieve enlightenment, or to focus your body’s energy.
Distance Energy Healing
There is also a form of energy healing called distance healing. Proponents of distance healing believe that a practitioner has psychic abilities and can heal you from a distance. One such example is John of God. He believes that he channel’s God’s healing abilities and gives them to people who are suffering from ailments of the body. You wouldn’t even have to visit John of God- you can send him your picture, and he can use God’s healing abilities to heal you from a distance.
Some distant healers work therapy sessions over the phone. They go through the same techniques that practitioners employ in their office; phone sessions simply cut out the problem of finding someone locally. Breathing techniques, shakra healing, and biofeedback techniques can be employed during a phone therapy session.
While distance healing is one of the most scrutinized forms of energy healing, there are clients that swear by their distance healing sessions, saying that it has helped with such conditions as chronic and acute pain, ADD and ADHD, depression, digestive balancing, and detoxification. Distance healers say that if you are open to the possibilities of distance healing, you can be helped.
